MBOT – Recognition for MEM Certified Farriers

The Malaysian Board of Technologists (MBOT), a Government linked company, provides professional recognition for technology based professions and talents. The purpose of this recognition is to elevate the standing, visibility and recognition of technologists and technicians in related technology. A meeting with the Registrar of MBOT took place on Monday 27th of March, at MBOT’s Headquarters in Putrajaya.

The board shall determine:

  • technical services in respect of any operation relating to product testing, product commissioning and product maintenance; and
  • technology services in respect of any operation relating to product development, product manufacturing, product testing, product commissioning and product maintenance.

MEM’s case for the farriers is that they do provide an essential service to the horse industry, and they are not only skilled in shoeing horses, but they have to have the technical knowledge and ability to make a variety of horse shoes. Apart from that, they require skills to operate a forge  as well as welding skills. To maintain accreditation, farriers are also required to attend Continuing Professional Development Courses, conduct surgical procedures on diseased hoofs while working in tandem with an Equine Veterinarian. The meeting ended on a positive note, with the Registrar who said that he would bring up our case before the board.  The prospects for the recognition for other service areas such as equine dental technicians; arena footing specialists and equine nutritionists.
